2025-2027 Basic Sciences Section Chair-elect

Dr. Morgan Carson-Marino is the Development Manager at the Reagan-Udall Foundation for the FDA. He is also a member of the 2023-24 APhA Academy of Pharmaceutical Research & Science (APhA-APRS) Policy Standing Committee and previous APhA Executive Resident.

Dr. Carson-Marino earned his Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) and Master of Science (MS) in Medical Sciences degrees from the University of Florida College of Pharmacy and College of Medicine, respectively.

Dr. Carson-Marino's research has been recognized with the American Heart Association (AHA) Stroke Council's Student Scholarship in Cerebrovascular Disease and Stroke. This honor was bestowed upon him in recognition of his efforts in developing and characterizing drug-inducible, cell-type-specific conditional murine knockout models. These translational models have contributed to our understanding of the Nrf2-mediated neuroprotective response as a therapeutic target in acute and chronic neurodegenerative diseases, such as stroke and Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Carson-Marino's expertise is further demonstrated by his publications in esteemed journals such as the American Journal of Physiology and Biomedicine.

Beyond his academic achievements, Dr. Carson-Marino pursued a postdoctoral research fellowship with the Safety Policy, Research, and Initiatives Team (SPiRIT) at the Office of New Drugs, Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) within the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Dr. Carson-Marino possesses expertise in data collection and management, with a distinct emphasis on drug labeling and the analysis of adverse drug events.

Dr. Carson-Marino's influence extends to his prior roles as an American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET) Washington Fellow and a United Nations (UN) Foundation Global Health Fellow.

Junling Wang, Ph.D., is a Professor and Vice Chair of Research at the Department of Clinical Pharmacy & Translational Science, University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy. She was also the Founding Chair of the Health Disparities and Equity Improvement Theme Team at her college. Dr. Wang is currently a facilitator/mentor for the American Pharmacists Association Foundation. She has served as a standing member and an ad hoc chair of the NIH Organization and Delivery of Health Services study section. She is also an Advisory Committee Co-Chair for the Value Assessment - Health Outcomes Research program of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America Foundation.

With AcademyHealth, Dr. Wang is an Education Council member, Quality and Value Interest Group Advisory Committee member, and Health Economics Interest Group Advisory Committee Member. She is currently co-leading the mentorship workgroup of the Health Economics Interest Group. Further, she has also held a slew of leadership positions with the American Public Health Association, such as program chair, membership chair, and Governing/Section Councilor. Dr. Wang’s research interests are racial and ethnic disparities, medication therapy management (MTM), and economic evaluation. Having been funded by NIH and other sources, she has brought millions of dollars to her institution and has published almost 100 journal articles. Her research team produced the first paper examining disparities in MTM services and has been cited multiple times by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for Medicare program reform. Dr. Wang has also received an Excellence in Teaching Award at her institution.

Adati Tarfa is a postdoctoral associate at the Yale School of Medicine and holds a Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from Drake University (2017) and an MS and PhD in Health Services Research in Pharmacy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Pharmacy (2023).

Dr. Tarfa's professional focus is to advance the pharmacy profession in key areas, including equitable care and improving access to pharmacy services for underserved populations. Her research has explored barriers to HIV care in community pharmacies from the perspectives of pharmacists and social workers, emphasizing multidisciplinary collaboration. Her dedication to her research and pharmacy professional development has earned her national recognition through service delivery awards in the fields of mental health and behavioral medicine.

Dr. Tarfa's journey with APhA began at Drake University, where she led the International Pharmaceutical Students' Federation (IPSF) and was inducted into Phi Lambda Sigma, Pharmacy Leadership Society. Within APRS, she has served on the Postgraduate Advisory Committee for two years and recently moderated a Science Talk series. She is enthusiastic about the opportunity to serve as a Postgraduate Officer and is committed to continuing to bring pharmacy practice into various (all) healthcare spaces.

Julie Oestreich, PharmD, PhD, FAPhA, is an Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Findlay College of Pharmacy in Ohio. She previously served as Director of the Research Office at the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy and as faculty at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. A teacher-of-the-year recipient at two separate institutions, Dr. Oestreich enjoys creative application of learning techniques to improve the classroom experience and building collaborative teams. Her scholarly contributions include 70+ publications and presentations in the areas of antiplatelet variability, pharmacogenomics, and educational gaming. Dr. Oestreich has received multiple research paper awards and is a fellow of the American Pharmacists Association.
