Pharmacies move to the forefront of the U.S. vaccine campaign

February 12 marks the launch of a new COVID-19 immunization program, under which the federal government is supplying vaccine directly to pharmacies to administer. As the effort gets underway, approximately 6,500 locations—including pharmacies embedded in grocery stores—are now prepared to administer 1 million doses to the public. Participation eventually will broaden to include as many as 40,000 pharmacy locations. The doses they receive will not count toward vaccine supplies allocated to states, but will be administered according to state rules for eligibility. For now, Walgreens is offering vaccination in 22 states and Puerto Rico, CVS Health is providing the service at stores in 18 states plus the U.S. territory, and Rite Aid is getting doses directly from the government in five states plus Philadelphia and New York City.
