Acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock to Keynote American Pharmacists Association Annual Meeting

WASHINGTON, DC – The American Pharmacists Association today announced the keynote speakers for APhA2021, the only annual conference that brings together all of pharmacy.

  • Janet Woodcock, acting commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration and director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, will speak at the conference’s second general session on Saturday, March 13. Most recently, she was the leader of the therapeutics team for Operation Warp Speed, which evaluated the potential benefits of monoclonal antibody treatments for certain COVID-19 patients.
  • Dan Schneider, the central character of last year’s acclaimed Netflix docuseries, “The Pharmacist,” will speak in an interview-style discussion with APhA President Michael Hogue. The Louisiana pharmacist will discuss his work to expose the rampant corruption behind the opioid addiction crisis. This session will take place at the conference’s opening general session on Friday, March 12. 
  • Liz Bohannon, entrepreneur and the author of Beginner’s Pluck: Build Your Life of Purpose, Passion and Impact Now, will wrap up the second general session on March 13. Bohannon is the founder of Sseko Designs. Since its start, it has grown from three women making sandals together under a mango tree, to an international fashion brand that provides employment, educational opportunities and entrepreneurial training to over 76 women in East Africa.

APhA: Pharmacy is Ready, Willing and Able to Launch New Federal Retail Pharmacy Vaccination Program

WASHINGTON, DC – The American Pharmacists Association issued the following statement today following the Biden administration’s launch of its federal retail pharmacy vaccination plan.

APhA Urges Biden Administration to Use Retired Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians in COVID-19 Vaccination Campaign

WASHINGTON, DC -- The American Pharmacists Association today asked the Biden administration to include recently retired pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in its campaign to vaccinate 100 million Americans against COVID-19 during the administration’s first 100 days. The request was made in a joint letter signed by APhA and nine other pharmacy organizations.

Several times during the pandemic, the US Department of Health and Human Services affirmed that pharmacists have the authority during the pandemic to order and administer COVID vaccines and administer pediatric vaccinations across the country. The federal government also gave pharmacy technicians the authority to administer COVID vaccines under the supervision of a pharmacist.

Vast Majority of Pharmacists Plan to or Have Been Vaccinated, Against COVID-19, APhA Survey Finds

WASHINGTON, D.C. – More than 9 in 10 pharmacists said they plan to or have been vaccinated against COVID-19, in a survey conducted last week by the American Pharmacists Association (APhA). Of these, 51% said they had received one dose, 10% had received two doses, and 31% planned to get it as soon as it is available. 

When asked about their readiness to administer the vaccine, 41% of pharmacists surveyed said they were already administering it, 38% said they would be able to administer it as soon as it is available, and 17% were preparing to administer the vaccinations and would participate in future phases of the vaccine delivery program.
