Unconventional activities to reduce stress

It’s not a secret that pharmacy school can be a challenging journey. Maintaining a consistent study schedule while confronting seemingly endless exams can feel insurmountable and suffocating. Finding an effective way to decompress and maintain your health during the demanding years of pharmacy school is vital to your success. But, you might ask: “What can I do to relax other than sleeping in and binge-watching my favorite show?”

Well, I have just the thing to help. Here are a few unconventional activities I have personally used that I hope can help you to manage your stress during your time in pharmacy school.

I love a challenge
Visiting an escape room after a Saturday exam has proven to be one of my favorite de-stressing activities. I find that jumping into another challenge right after an exam occupies my mind and reduces my academic anxiety. Working through puzzles with friends not only shifts my focus away from school, but also allows me to laugh and enjoy much-needed social time. It might sound counterintuitive initially, but it’s a routine I have maintained for more than 2 years of pharmacy school.

Keep active
Exercise is a great way to improve your health and refresh your mind, but not everyone feels like they have the time. I have found that by incorporating a low-stress study routine into my exercises, like reviewing flashcards while walking on the treadmill, I can keep myself active while alleviating my anxiety about not studying enough.

Alternatively, I found that I can get the most out of my time by unwinding while I exercise. Taking a break from endless hours studying indoors by taking a stroll through a local botanical garden or park has done mountains of good for my mental health. Walking in such a calming environment helps me clear my mind, reduce stress, and return to my studies feeling refreshed and focused.

But what if you crave social interaction in your free time? Consider joining an intramural sports team at your school. it’s a good way to try something new, get some exercise, and spend time with friends.

Feline companionship

Last but not least, I visit a cat cafe when I feel I’m about to burn out from studying. I don’t think a lot of people have thought about this one. Spending time with cats is incredibly soothing and can help ease the tension built up from studying. Combining a warm drink, a cozy atmosphere, and some feline companionship can work wonders for your mood.

It’s a marathon, not a sprint

Making it through pharmacy school is all about maintaining a work–life balance to prevent burnout. Engaging in activities that allow you to destress, regardless of what form that activity may take, can significantly maintain your overall health and academic performance.

Pharmacy school is a marathon, not a sprint, so be sure to prioritize self-care so you may navigate its challenges with a clear mind and heart.
