Meet APhA Executive Resident Shivani Modi

NP SPOTLIGHT

My name is Shivani Modi, PharmD, and I graduated from the Notre Dame of Maryland University School of Pharmacy. While in school, I served in several leadership roles, including APhA–ASP Chapter Policy Vice President. I am extremely passionate about health policy, and was engaged with the Maryland Pharmacy Coalition and Maryland Pharmacists Association, as well as Pharmacy Legislative Week. In 2021, I had the opportunity to serve as a student legislative chair and moderate Legislative Day. As a final-year student pharmacist, my experience as an advocate for the profession was further enhanced through an APPE rotation that allowed me to work on legislation related to payment parity and reimbursement issues. My past experiences—including working as a pharmacy intern in the community setting—have helped me understand pharmacy practice and the need for advocacy to improve the scope of practice for pharmacists, which will then lead to optimized patient care.

Outside of pharmacy, I love hiking and outdoor activities, as well as creating arts and crafts during my free time. I also enjoy baking and traveling, and hope to travel more as things return to normal post-pandemic.

Five questions for Shivani

1. Which Disney character is most like you? Belle, from Beauty and the Beast. I resonate with her outspoken and girly personality.
2. What two items would you have on a deserted island? I would bring my phone so I can listen to music and call my family, and essential medication such as Tylenol to take as needed.
3. Which season is your favorite? I like spring the most. As all the trees are blooming again, and we get to see beautiful and colorful flowers. Also, people are more outdoors where it’s not too hot and not too cold.
4. What is your favorite meal? My favorite meal is breakfast. I look forward to having breakfast every morning, which typically includes yogurt with berries, and granola or oatmeal with berries.
5. What have you enjoyed most as a Practice resident? So far, I have enjoyed working with the different academies, policy committees, and other APhA departments. I work with the team to develop strategies to advance pharmacists’ scope of practice, and produce resources along with education forum webinars for member engagement. Additionally, I love the history surrounding APhA’s building. It’s a beautiful sight to check out the capital city from APhA’s Potomac View Terrace, which overlooks the National Mall.
