Meet Gracie Mannis, a final-year PharmD candidate at South College School of Pharmacy. We recently caught up with Gracie to learn about her and find out why she decided to become an APhA–ASP member.
Student Pharmacist Magazine (SPM): Why did you choose to become an APhA–ASP member?
Gracie: I chose to become a member of APhA as it encompasses each and every pharmacist. As an incoming student, I was unsure what I would do after pharmacy school and felt this would be an excellent opportunity to network and discover new career opportunities. Oh, how I underestimated what APhA could do for me!
SPM: What is your favorite APhA–ASP member benefit?
Gracie: My favorite APhA–ASP member benefit is, by far, the networking and many opportunities to discover new things and people. Being a member allows you to collaborate with those who share similar interests and even be a part of incredible initiatives that benefit both pharmacists and patients. Additionally, many helpful resources are available through APhA, no matter your practice setting.
SPM: What is your favorite APhA–ASP memory?
Gracie: My favorite memory by far is attending the APhA–ASP Summer Leadership Institute in Washington, D.C. It provided me with many unique experiences, including going to Capitol Hill and advocating to state legislators, making new friends, and even touring APhA headquarters. The amazing people I met have since become mentors and helped me develop my goals and technique for leading my chapter.
SPM: Are there any projects or initiatives you've been particularly passionate about within APhA–ASP?
Gracie: Throughout my involvement with APhA–ASP, I have had the opportunity to work on many projects and initiatives. Specifically, one I am most passionate about is Operation Substance Use Disorders. As a future pharmacist, I have the power to help individuals in need, especially regarding substance use disorders. While leading my chapter, I was able to help organize Naloxone kit building and training that provided rescue medication to more than 15,000 individuals. This May, I will be attending the APhA Institute of Substance Use Disorders, and I am super excited!
SPM: If you were a superhero, what power would you have?
Gracie: If I were a superhero, my power would be multilocation. This is the ability to be in multiple places at once. Imagine getting to go to class while also on a tropical vacation. Yes, please!
SPM: After a long day of school or work, what do you like to do in the evening to unwind?
Gracie: I love to bake and read! After a long day, I will try a new recipe and enjoy it in my favorite chair with a good book. Lately, I have been into watercolor painting as well. It allows me to express my creativity in a fun way, and they also make a great gift!
