2025 resolutions: Parlez-vous francais? I will, once again

Kendall Kerr is a final-year PharmD candidate at the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy and a member of the 2024–2025 APhA–ASP Policy Standing Committee.

When I began my pharmacy school journey in 2019, the idea of receiving my PharmD degree in the year 2025 seemed like a lifetime away. Now, that year is upon us! While I do not know what program, state, or even time zone I will reside in next year, I have found comfort through setting a goal for myself that is attainable regardless of my physical location.

During high school, I spent 4 years learning French. Unfortunately, that knowledge was quickly lost in college and replaced by molecules and math. In the new year, I aim to dust off my French textbooks and relearn the language.

Ready to test my skills
As a reward for relearning French, and as a motivator to stay consistent, I plan to test my skills in France! For years, my mom and I have discussed toasting to my doctorate degree with a glass of champagne in the champagne wine region of France. It has been a dream of mine to visit this beautiful part of the country, and I know my trip will be significantly enhanced if I can speak the native language and communicate with the locals.

Aside from the word “croissant,” I have not spoken any French in many years; however, I am hopeful that the basics will come back to me quickly and make this trip an exceptionally memorable part of 2025!

Change is necessary for growth
The new year is here, and thus graduation is quickly approaching! When reflecting on pharmacy school, the days were long, but the years sure were short. I am filled with excitement but also nerves as I look ahead and ponder the uncertainty of my future. It is bittersweet to be leaving school, but I recognize that change is necessary for growth.

Whatever change the new year brings to your life, I hope you find joy in the journey. As for me, I will be saying “au revoir” to my time as a student and “bonjour” to the next adventure!
